Bachelors of Fine Arts- A 4-year degree programme
The B.F.A with specializations in Applied Art and Painting is a four-year programme instituted under Sushant University School of Art and Architecture and is designed to fulfill the creative aspirations of the students, who after their +2, are keen on pursuing an artistic career.
The B.F.A course at Sushant enables the development of creative thinking and expression in the mind of the students at the same time leading to expansion of their required skill–sets. It provides them with a wide spectrum to explore, encouraging their versatility and nurturing the same. Continuing the spirit of creative expression, the BFA at Sushant focuses on multi and interdisciplinary approaches along with the use of new media in art practice.
The programme is unique in shaping the visual sensibilities of students while giving them the opportunity to work within the confines of a studio space as well as interact with faculty members, professional artists, industry experts and their peer group. They will explore various avenues of application of their artistic and creative skills such as in the fields of Public and Urban Art, Media and entertainment industry, Installation/Site specific Art, Graphic Design, Animation and Advertising.
Eligibility: Minimum of 50% aggregate marks in class 12th or equivalent from any stream
A 4- year undergraduate programme with the specialization in Painting and Applied Arts, aims at training students in both traditional techniques, developing an understanding of mediums and materials, as well as enabling them to be at par with latest technologies and shifts happening in their respective fields. The Programme focuses on holistic development of the students by incorporating a multidisciplinary approach, in terms of exploring, film and design, alternative photography, Game art, Public Art, Printmaking throughout their journey of four years. There has been a special emphasis on blurring the boundaries between fine arts and applied, so as to nurture more unique and authentic creative expressions.
Foundation Year(1st and 2nd Semester)
Foundation year is common for Applied Arts and Painting Students. The focus is on underpinning observational and basic skills which are required to express and practice visual arts.With Courses like Painting, Drawing, students develop fundamental skills, while courses like Design, Sculpture, Computer Applications exposes students to think creatively through 2-Dimensional 3-Dimensional and Virtual Space(s). Theory courses like Fundamentals of Visual Arts and Introduction to Indian Art and Aesthetics become stepping stones for students to understand elements of Art and History of Indian Art to develop aesthetic sense.
Applied Arts
The Applied Arts specialization a student will learn courses like Graphic design, Animation(2 and 3D) Drawing and illustration, Typography, User Interface design, Photography, History of Visual Communication and Design, Advertising profession and practice, along with them they’ll explore electives courses like, Film and Design, Print-Making and Public Art. The aim is to create a working professional who is well aware of the latest industry trends and can think and articulate ideas in a creative fashion with the use of technology.
The Second year(3rd and 4th Semester)- curriculum includes Graphic Design studios for Applied arts Design, The objective of the course is to understand and explore various applications of Graphic Design.
Drawing & Illustration: The aim is to develop skills in creative drawings and illustrations in both mediums (Manual and Digital).
Typography: To make students aware of the role of typography in design, in terms of legibility and communicate the message better.
History of Visual communication and Advertising Theory: are the theory courses to impart to learners the lineage of communicating through visuals, and making students aware of major aspects of the advertising industry.
PhotographyStudents will be introduced to the concept of Photography, composition, basic understanding of cameras.
Animation: In today’s fast changing world, the demand for animators who can create engaging content is increasing rapidly, students learn to build characters and explore 2D animation
Along with that in elective course Print-making: Students will learn the knitty-gritty of relief printing technique.
The Third year(5th and 6th Semester)
Graphic Design, a practical course in Advanced Computer Application focuses on creating intelligent and powerful visual communication.
Drawing & Illustration New things are introduced in the form of ‘Style and identity’ illustration practice along with commercial illustration in Indian traditional art.
Animation Introducing motion graphics will help them stay updated to the new design trends and also make them more diverse in their animation skills.
Film and Design
Public Art
The Fourth year(Graphic Design) Discover the how and why behind creating inclusive designs. ( Drawing & Illustration) You will Learn to refine your Sketches into Polished Artwork. (User Interface Design) (UI) defines the way humans interact with the information systems.( Animation ) we will Introduced 3D animation ( Drawing & Illustration)
Painting
Painting still life, Portrait, landscape/Outdoor and Composition, traditional methods and techniques of representation like Mural, Miniature painting techniques, Tempera, Wash techniques, Contemporary Art practices, Digital methods and techniques of visualization, along with them they’ll explore electives courses like, Murals, Film and Design, Print-Making and Public Art. The aim is to create a working professional who is well aware of the latest industry trends and can think and articulate ideas in a creative fashion with the use of technology. It is not intended at creating a singular focus in traditional mediums only. The importance given to Art as thinking and willingness to deploy new media and new techniques – digital or other is what differentiates Bachelors at Fine Arts at Sushant from other such programmes.
Second Year curriculum includes observational drawings from live objects, learning to capture still moments in the form of painting still life, plant study, portraiture, outdoor studies in oil or acrylic Mediums. Whereas Students will understand traditional methods like Tempera and Gouache. To be at par with the digital realm, students will explore pixel art, glitch art, and virtual storytelling on various digital platforms.Students will also work in techniques like relief Printmaking. In theory they’ll be taught Western Art History and Medieval Indian Art history till modern time.
End of the fourth semester of 2nd year Painting, students have to do Summer Internships under practicing artists and art organizations, to get a sense of various processes and practices of current times.
Third Year Painting curriculum includes Painting creative Composition in painting medium and at the same time motivates students towards experimentation with new mediums. Students will learn traditional ways of casting Murals. Drawing course will focus on more creative endeavors and as a structure for individualistic language. In Art Photography, students will be familiarized with the camera as an apparatus. Students will learn alternative photographic methods like cyanotypes. Third year starts orienting students for Contemporary Art practices by introducing students with various non-traditional forms of practices like that of zines, artists books, virtual games making or web based works. In Elective courses like Film and Design students will understand the basics of the creative process of filmmaking. A course on Public Art provides the student with understanding of publics and community engagement.
End of the fourth semester of 3rd year Painting, students have to do Summer Internships under practicing artists and art organizations, to get a sense of various processes and practices of current times.
Fourth year painting curriculum incorporates advanced learning of all the core courses like Drawing, Painting, Contemporary Art, students will be motivated for research backed conceptual learning and where the main focus is on students building their own authentic individual language. There will be a special emphasis on portfolio development to make the students industry ready.
