The Punjabi word SAKHI means a short story, an experience or an anecdote, usually related to the life of a great personality, targeted towards inspiring people at large. In many households, Sakhis are narrated to young children and adolescents while putting them to sleep so that the theme that the Sakhi carries, is implanted in the innocent minds of children and creates for them a guiding path for life…

The narrator more often is the mother, who upon having herself been encouraged and motivated by these Sakhis during her childhood, recognizes the practical value of the same and considers it worthy for a pass-on to the next generation…

A competition on Sakhi narration was one of the several activities undertaken at the Sushant University to commemorate the ongoing 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev, the first Guru and the founder of Sikhism. Students from the School of Law, The School of Engineering and Technology, Architecture, Design, commerce and Hotel Management, School of Health Science irrespective of their spiritual beliefs and faiths, participated enthusiastically in the Sakhi Narration competition.

The Sakhis encompassed the life of the Guru and illustrated in the widest colours and hues, his teachings, his voyages covering almost one-fourth of the planet and highlighting greatly the truth that all human beings belong to a Universal Religion that preaches love, peace, harmony and brotherhood. Being an ardent voyager, most of the Sakhis were centered towards the experiences he came across while travelling and meeting people.

The purpose behind the Sushant University celebrating with full enthusiasm and fervor, the Guru’s Milestone Anniversary was to highlight the age-old belief that it is indeed quite possible to create a UTOPIA, a situation wherein every human being has full regard and respect of the other human as the creation of a masterpiece by the Almighty and comes to realize that the only way to attain peace and eternal bliss and to get free from the soul coming back to earth in the form of different species was possible by the continuous remembrance of the guiding spirit (by Simran) and by being in company of the enlightened souls during the journey of life on earth. A soul in a human body with the ‘power of true thoughts’ is the pre-requisite of achieving a permanent redemption.

The theme that was commonly highlighted in all the Sakhis, as the Guru Granth Saheb says “Manas Ki Jaat Sabhae Ekae Pehchaanbo” – since all human beings of the world are destined to conduct themselves and live their lives in an analogous way, they must also believe in universality of all religions…

Prizes were awarded to the top two students Nandini Bhasin and Divyansh and also certificates were awarded to all the other participants.
