Five Million Plus Cities of India

 

A workshop on India’s ‘Five Million Plus’ Cities was organized by School of Planning and Development (SPD), Sushant University in collaboration with University of Nottingham, UK and Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 28th February, 2019 in New Delhi. Opening the workshop, Dr. Vibhuti Sachdev, Director Architecture, Planning and Design Schools, AU, SPD emphasized the need for exchange of ideas with leading global universities and think-tanks to look at new approaches towards the planning and governance of these mega cities. Prof. P.S.N. Rao, Director, SPA Delhi was the Chief Guest. Prof. Ashok Kumar, SPA Delhi, Prof. Michelle Clarke, Associate PVC, University Nottingham and Mr. Vijay Srirangan, DG, Bombay Chamber were the special guests.

Special workshop on “Local area planning”

The Lecture was delivered by Dr PSN Rao, Director School of Planning and Architecture, SPA Delhi. Chairman, Delhi Urban Arts Commission DUAC.

The day long work shop was undertaken by Dr. PSN Rao where he trained students about the guidelines, methodology, participatory approach to Planning at local level and shred many good examples of application of local area planning in certain cities internationally, as well as initiatives of Govt of Delhi towards Local area Planning.

Panel Discussion on Education for an Urbanising Planet

The panel on Education for an Urbanising Planet: Inducting Urban Planning into School Curricula agreed to the idea of sensitising school students to Urban Planning. It was unanimously agreed that more deliberations are required to determine whether strengthening of existing curricula is pertinent or inclusion of a new module may be more in line with the requirements of the time so as to create awareness about Planning.

Panel Discussion on Reconfiguring Planning Education for the New World Order

In a panel discussion on Reconfiguring Planning Education for the New World Order, leading academic and industry experts from the field of Planning, summed up that in the changing technological and societal environment, the nature of planning is changing. Hence, there is an imperative on planning education to upgrade its thinking and toolsets.

Public Lecture on Effects based Planning

Prof. Hamish Rennie from Lincoln University, New Zealand delivered a lecture on Effects based Planning. PRIA and GPSC were the Knowledge Partners of the event. Prof. Rennie shared his experiences from New Zealand with respect to traditional planning approach to sustainable, development as well as the environmental effects based approach. The lecture was followed by a panel discussion by experts from public and private organisations to deliberate on the approaches used for Planning in the country. Mr. Dinesh Chauhan, CTP, GMDA chaired and Mrs. Anita Makkar, Principal- HDFC School & Founder member, GPSC, Dr. Namrata Jatli, Save the Children and Dr. Anshuman Karol, PRIA were the panelists.

Special lecture on Prospects on Planning education and scope of Planning Profession, 2015

The Lecture was delivered by Dr PSN Rao, Director School of Planning and Architecture, SPA Delhi. Chairman, Delhi Urban Arts Commission DUAC.

The lecture covered role of an Urban Planner, skills acquired by an Urban Planner, applicability of those skills in professional world, types of work opportunities that an urban planner can undertake, and types of organizations that hire urban planners

Special lecture on Prospects on “Changing Perspective and Growing Relevance of Legislation in Planning Profession”, 2016

The lecture was delivered by Mr. Rahul Singh, Advocate, National Green Tribunal, Supreme Court, Delhi High Court, Director, GreenC India, Private Limited

The lecture covered Genesis of Planning Legislation in India-Constitution Overview and Caselaw analysis, Understanding  in content of Town Planning  legislations-Maharashtra & Uttar Pradesh and formulation, Explain the Provision with Case laws, Discussion on The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2013 and Draft Rules 2014 and brief on Land Revenue Code of the States and Discussion on Model Building Code 2016 and it is implication of Environment and Development.

Special lecture on Prospects on “Role of Planners in Disaster management”, 2017

The lecture was delivered by Sh. G.Padmanabhan, Emergency Analyst, UNDP, and India.

Sh. G. Padmanabhan has been handling Disaster Management portfolio of UNDP-India since 1995. He was the Team Leader for implementing the GOI-UNDP Disaster Risk Management in 176 districts in 17 states of India. He was also closely involved in developing UN’s Tsunami Recovery Framework in India. He also moderates the activities of an electronic network of about 3500 DM practitioners in India under an UN system initiative called Solution Exchange. Sh. Padmanabhan has been providing advice to Governments of countries in the Asia region.

Talk by Sh. Padmanabhan provided valuable inputs to the students on dealing with the disaster related city planning issues and guided them towards more pragmatic solutions towards disaster management. The lecture covered role, scope and prospects of Planner in Disaster Management, and provided them with clarity and direction in utilizing their knowledge in their course of profession

Special Lecture on “Master Planning of Gurugram – Solutions and Possibilities”, 2017

The lecture was delivered by Sh. R.S. Bhatt, District Town Planner, Town and Country Planning department, Gurugram.

The lecture provided valuable inputs to the students on dealing with the city’s planning issues and guided them towards more pragmatic solutions. The lecture equipped the students with the legal possibilities, scope and prospects of Planners in formulating the statutory Master Plan for any city.
