Short Biography
Shruti Sarkar is a visual art practitioner and educator based in Delhi-NCR. Her research area
entails concerns around the usage of images of violence in the realm of art and the aspect
of spectatorship. Thinking through the categories like ‘citizenship’, how ‘bodies’ are managed in
this modern bio-political world and treated as ‘clusters’ and ‘data’. In Sarkar’s ongoing
site-specific work she is exploring what she calls ‘uncared’ parts of the city and people who
inhabit in such spaces through walking, archiving, documenting, drawing, sculptures, projecting, and engaging with abandoned structures. Using methodologies of image-making, archiving, and walking, she wants to explore history-making as a personal endeavor as opposed to what the nation-state curates.
Shruti has done her M.A. in Visual Arts(practice) from Ambedkar University Delhi 2021, and her B.F.A in Painting from the College of Art, Delhi University2017, she worked as a researcher and writer with the Delhi-based Sanchit Art Gallery(2022-2023).
She is currently teaching at Sushant University, Gurgaon. Her teaching methodology focuses on critical thinking, research-based art practice, artists as thinkers, and practice beyond the conventions of studio space. Students are encouraged to explore their practice not only through various mediums but at the same time focusing on conceptual nuances. An institution like Sushant University promotes and encourages freedom in teaching and experimentation. The diverse faculty, with a varied set of interests and approaches, tries to nurture an environment for students that not only prepares them for the field but at the same time equipes them for this every changing contemporary art world.
