With iPAC 2019 just around the corner, and amidst the mounting excitement, let’s take a look at what exactly is on offer through this 5-day line-up from Sushant School of Art and Architecture (SSAA) and Sushant School of Planning and Development (SSPD), Ansal University.

DAY 1: WRITING ARCHITECTURE
The Opening Day of iPac is dedicated to the idea of bringing architects and artists into a closer dialogue. SSAA, living up to its name and original intent places much importance to the Arts past of our profession. The panels comprise of people who represents the finest proponents of this dialogue between architects and artists. We have His Excellency Francesco Pensabene - the Italian ambassador to India, Satish Gupta - an eminent artist, MN Ashish Ganju - an architect and educator, as well as Roshini Vadehra - art collector and owner of a famous art gallery. The life and works of the legendary architect and educator CSH Jhabvala would be introduced by I M Chishti, himself as architect an educator of great repute, followed by a photographic exhibition of Jhabvala’s works at the JKC Gallery at SSAA.

DAY 2: HEALING BY DESIGN
On the Second Day of iPAC, design is not limited to the verb “design”, or the process of putting together a product, but the “intention” or program of achieving an end result. Design absolutely needs to acknowledge all those it touches, especially those it has routinely and intentionally ignored. The land itself, with its history, original inhabitants, both man and nature, its natural processes, native vegetation, water systems, etc. must come into the equation for a truly Democratic resolution. Why? Because every critter counts! Then and only then will the wounds inflicted by greed, politics, narcissism, and exploitation, begin to heal, and the design professionals redeem themselves.
The day is led by Gregory Burgess –widely acclaimed for his major contribution to the Australian identity, cultural life, and the built environment in a practice that has been upheld as model for its cultural sensitivity, inclusive collaborative process, its powerful and poetic embodiment of spirit of place and identity in all its diversity, and Akshay Kaul – exemplar in exposing stakeholders and professionals (sociologists, ecologists, architects, landscape architects, anthropologists) to the bottom-up process of development and in seeking creative collaborative solutions.

DAY 3: MAPPING KEEPING
The Third Day of iPAC is divided into two components – a talk and a design charrette.
The talk - (Don’t) Put Her in Her Place by Dr Anuradha Chatterjee - will discuss the patriarchal foundations of women, space, and sexuality. It will argue that acts of violence (physical, emotional, and sexual) against women in a public space are also acts of spatial violence. The talk will discuss current urban art projects and performances that seek to confront and unsettle these norms and perceptions.
This talk will also set the stage for a Design Charrette by a group of students from SSAA who will select a site and suggest a new, utopian future of what women are able to do in a public space; challenge the dichotomy between public and private space; and reconceptualise the public realm. Students would challenge existing social relationships and propose alternative social relationships that empower women to imagine new spatial utopias which make possible new ways of claiming ownership of public spaces.

DAY 4: WRITING ARCHITECTURE
The Fourth Day of iPAC questions whether we write enough (on) architecture.
What are the ways in which architecture can be or rather should be written (about)? What if architecture or the making of the built environment becomes a way of writing itself onto sites, contexts and histories? What if History becomes the method of writing architecture of the future? The Writing Architecture Day at iPac2019 will explore these questions and many more to build a discourse relevant to the entire discipline. It will engage with a plethora of forms of writing through talks and focused huddles around each question that arises. We include architects, writers, historians, pedagogues, practitioners, academicians, scholars and observers of the discipline into the debate.
The day would culminate in the launch of our journal Verandah, SSAA’s very own initiative on writing (of/in/by) architecture. Verandah’s contributors will, through a curated exhibition of their works, present the ideas and contribute to the (dif)fusion of making and writing Architecture.

DAY 5: URBAN FUTURES
Gurgaon is unique as a city that grew at an unprecedented pace over a few decades to get established as the ‘Millenium City’ at the beginning of the 21st century. The economic impact of the city is reflected in its having the third highest per capita income in India and Indian offices of half of Fortune 500 companies. Gurgaon has been an experimental ground with many facets that emerged at a lighting speed, positioning it as a manufacturing, real estate, commercial and financial hub over the last few decades. In the hurry to position and reposition itself, the city gained a global perception but struggles with addressing many other dimensions in the process.
‘Urban Futures’ by SSAA and SSPD is a platform to deliberate on two thematic areas in particular. The first one addresses the emergent role of Gurgaon as an education hub and explores its future as a learning city. The second one is focused on tackling issues with respect to urban development that are viewed as experiments driven by diverse stakeholders coming together to create an inclusive future.
Urban Futures has been structured into brief presentations and two panel discussions ‘Gurgaon: A Learning City’ and ‘Gurgaon: A Living Lab’ that create a dialogue between global learnings and local initiatives, to create a collective vision about the future of Gurgaon. These deliberations will be taken forward as a commitment towards 2020 urban conference that will disseminate as well as assimilate.
