Significance Of Independence Day In Current Times By- Falak

If we look around, the Independence Day is not on most people’s minds. There are few people that remember the significance of 15th August, and even then, they don’t care much about it. But how can we even expect them to celebrate with the situation that we’re in?

Yes, we gained independence 74 years ago, but we still aren’t free. We aren’t free to be our own selves, or to roam around as we please. There are so many social evils, along with covid and many other things, that are acting as barriers to being truly independent.

Let’s talk about why we celebrate Independence Day in the first place. We celebrate 15th of August to show respect to those who fought for our lives; these people constantly protested and risked their lives and futures, so that we could have a satisfactory existence. We celebrate this day to look back to what we have achieved and look forward to what we can do to make the country better in all aspects.

The country needs some hope and feeling of patriotism in current times and the Independence Day may help bring some joy if we focus on appreciating those freedom fighters that fought for that feeling. These days we are so invested in ourselves that we forget to appreciate the other’s existence and the things they do for us. We shall use this day to treasure the people around us, as well as those that challenged the British all those years ago.

Do you think that we are actually truly independent right now? Forget about covid; even if it wasn’t there, I think that we still wouldn’t be free. If you ask me why, I would tell you that the society that we currently live in, intentionally or not, oppresses the socially weak communities. If we were in their place, we would feel trapped and thus, all the hard work of the freedom fighters would go down the drain.

While we celebrate our independence, we must also think about those who aren’t able to do the same. India is a shining example of unity in diversity, so we must also unite to ensure equality in all forms. Before covid, we used to celebrate this day with love and patriotism in the air, we shall do the same now as well, but from our own homes. We have all the means and we shall to our best to spread love and make people feel free and that they belong.
