GLOBALISATION AND ITS IMPACT ON LEGAL EDUCATION IN INDIA

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.
– Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Universities and Law Colleges in India offer legal education at different levels. Initially, a student could only pursue law after completing an undergraduate course but with the change in legal education; one can study law after passing the senior secondary education and can have a focused approached right after passing out from a school. After completing graduation in law, a student can further go for Masters in Law (LL.M.) and the Ph.D. in Law. Some of the Universities have also introduced integrated courses. Study of law now post-globalization era is no more restricted to Indian Law. Globalization with respect to legal education would be introducing the students to a global curriculum, global faculty, and global interaction. However, it comes with a whole lot of challenges. Universities and School now focus on classroom teaching as well as practical exposure that is must for the students of law. Internships are often one of the greatest learning experiences in a law student’s life and now, the move is towards global internships providing wider exposure to law students. However, finding the right internship after the first year itself can be difficult due to the sheer number of options. However, most of the Universities and Law Schools have a dedicated Internship and Placement Cell to help students make an informed choice depending on their interest with a comprehensive scheme of internship training for different batches and courses with the different avenue to be explored every year while pursuing the legal education. These specialized Committees or Cells are the links between the students of SOL and the legal fraternity. The committee ensures the concern of the students by providing them with internships and placements in their respective fields of interest. These Committees organize Seminars and Workshops to help students make the most out of it. The scenario has changed with globalization totally. Now, interviews are taken through video conferencing, the new concept of webinars have come in, online courses with live lectures, recorded classroom lectures. This is extremely challenging, as Universities now need to be equipped with the latest technology to support the transformation in legal education. There is a need to raise academic standards, create the better environment for research, develop sound infrastructure, latest technology, and better career opportunities promoting which means professional advancement of academics.
The most challenging task is to strike a proper balance to ensure that students are taught a fair mix of courses that give them knowledge and training in Indian Law but at the same time prepare them for facing the challenges of globalization by exposing them to a global curriculum. The next challenge that lies is hiring of good faculty who can do complete justice to this expanding curriculum.
Accelerating globalization has opened new gates for those pursuing the legal education and there are a plethora of opportunities in transnational law. With Indian business increasingly expanding overseas, Global firms wish to advise Indian businesses on the foreign and international law in international commercial transactions and in international arbitrations. If international firms come in, they will be led and staffed in India by Indian lawyers which will create employment opportunities. There will be sharing of best practices and India can allow entry on the basis that only Indian qualified lawyers can advise on Indian law like Singapore.
