THE FUTURE OF DIGITISATION IN DESIGN

The digitization of content has proved to be a great form of evolution in all industries. The design industry could not prove anything different. The versatility of digital design allows one to work across industries like animation, gaming, video production and television, web design, product design, marketing, social media, and the arts. The dominance of fast internet, advanced technologies, and software approaches is majorly impacting the design world.

Heritage sites have also been found adapting with benefits from this evolving technology. Preserving cultural diversity helps not only protect the traditions but also help preserve philosophies, problem-solving techniques, and theological viewpoints of different time periods. As a source of identity, heritage may be a precious factor for empowering native communities and enabling vulnerable groups to share systematically in social and cultural life. It also can give time-tested answers for conflict prevention and reconciliation. The built and intangible heritage can now be documented and investigated by conservation experts through the use of 3-D laser scanning and imaging, high-dynamic image ranging, and launch unmanned aerial vehicles to cover more area with less money, time and manpower.

Traditional excavations through shovels and trowels and documentation through hand drawings take more mapping and the findings can be maintained by conservationists for generations to come. Digitization fosters better collaborations with archaeologists, conservation experts, government officials, and art historians as it saves on time, provides accuracy, and ensures speedier distribution of resources, and facilitates access to information. Such technology-driven preservation activities of heritage sites increase socioeconomic development and boost tourism. For various types and scales of heritage conservation projects, myriad technologies are available. Some of the technologies are Reflectance Transformation Imaging, Photogrammetry, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), and Virtual Reality.

Other than the restoration of heritage sites, fast-moving technology has also been used in creating experiential designs. Limitless connectivity and digital technologies have drastically changed the way industries design, produce and deliver their products. The automotive industry was one of the early adopters of connectivity and robotics. Freed from the restraints of physical availability, teams can work more closely together across multiple disciplines giving more fruitful results and innovative solutions.

The use of AR and VR has bent the ways of traditional designs completely. Such technologies have also made the physical environment more accessible for people with disabilities. Revolution in the architecture industry has also been observed due to these technologies. They allow designers to experience their visions in real life through a 3D model. The ability to present the clients with such experiences helps them understand the design better and helps the designer and the client to express their ideas in a better way. Digitization has created an immense number of opportunities to grow with these innovative technologies and improved the existing practices.

One of the top universities in Delhi-NCR, Sushant University, has a well-established School of Design which offers multiple courses in design suited to the dynamic trends and demands of the industry.
