To be or not to be’ In the Planning Profession

Since human beings first began to settle, Planning has established itself as a vital profession. Planning was not recognised as a profession due to the lack of formal schooling available to educate the students on the course and to entitle it as a profession. Despite its well-deserved rising popularity, it has been denied the respect as a distinct profession for too long. The lack of formal education and knowledge of this field are one of the key factors. Planning was done by persons from various professions, who had some awareness of their surroundings, were skilled at observation, or wished to help the community as a whole. Most notable urban planners have come from fields such as architecture, sociology, journalism, and more.

There are very few people who have formal training in the field of planning. Sushant University, one of the best colleges in Gurgaon, offers courses in Planning and Development. Apart from the academic curriculum; it organises conferences, workshops and trainings for the students to inculcate the aspect of experiential learning.

As Urban Planning has just recently begun to be recognised as a significant career in the country and the rest of the globe has begun to appreciate what this area has to offer, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a massive investment in the Planning profession’s capacity building in the current 2022 budget plan.

A career in planning profession is going to be the next big thing!

School of Planning and Development has partnered with Harvard Business School Online (HBSO) to include Entrepreneurship in their curriculum, as the country is moving forward to implement the Planning programme in the Higher Education Curriculum. Through the HBSO Program, students are given a structured set of classes, coaching, and access to the school’s global network of entrepreneurial alumni. The planning curriculum is more diverse as a result of this programme.

Our curriculum teaches students how to design physical spaces, regulations, and technology that will influence how those spaces are used, with the objective of preserving and improving the quality of the human environment at all scales, from personal to global. It gives the students a chance to be both a planner and an entrepreneur in one go.
