An industrial visit for B.Sc. MLT students was organized by the School of Health Sciences, Sushant University, on 9th March 2022 to Lions Blood Bank, W Pratiksha Hospital. The session started with an introduction to different selection criteria of donors. How requisition form is filled by the patient’s family (requesting for blood unit) and how donor blood bag cross-matching is done with different testing kits and after checking all parameters, the blood bag is allocated to the family. The whole blood bank is divided into different sections:-
- Bleeding /Collection Room: – The voluntary donors donate their blood in this section under the supervision of the medical officer.
- Refreshment Section: – After blood donation, the donors are provided with light refreshment and asked to be in laying position for 10-15mins.
- Sample checking room: – The donated blood bag is checked for blood groups and sent to the TTI section for testing 5 major serological tests. Blood Bag comprises 350ml or 450 ml unit depending on the weight of the donor.
- TTI section: – Here the blood bag is checked for 5 major serological tests (i.e. HIV, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, and Malaria). If unfortunately, any blood bag tests positive for HIV or Syphilis, the proper counseling is done by the Medical Officer, and the report is shared with the civil hospital for documentation.
- Component Separation Section: – After all tests are done, the blood bag is sent to the component separation unit where different components like PRBCS, FFP, PRP are prepared with the help of Centrifuge.
Anticoagulants and SAGM plays an important role in the storage of blood bag for 35-42 days.
